Alen Simoyan criticizes CSTO at meeting with Russian Duma speaker

Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan during his visit to Moscow on 10 October  said that the CSTO is unable to respond promptly and effectively to aggression against one of its members.

"Armenia does not have time for long-term solutions in the field of security," Simonyan said during the meeting with Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.

At the same time, the Speaker of the Armenian Parliament expressed hope that the proposals developed during the work of the CSTO will contribute to de-escalation of the situation and the establishment of stability in the region.

A statement published on the website of the Russian State Duma said that Volodin supported Simonyan's idea to discuss regional security issues within the framework of the parliamentary format with the participation of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Valodin also highlighted his concerns on the state of the Russian language in Armenia. He talked about opening schools in Armenia where education would be available in Russian.

In early October, Simonyan announced that Armenia had not received a response from Russia to its appeal for military assistance, which was submitted in September. “Armenia submitted an application and until today, if I am not mistaken, we have not received a response, not even a negative one.”

As already known, on September 13, Azerbaijan launched an attack on the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia. The Armed Forces of Azerbaijan intensively bombarded the positions of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia and civilian infrastructure objects deep in the territory of Armenia, in several directions. A total of 207 Armenian soldiers were killed.
