Amaras Monastery captured by Azerbaijani forces

Amaras Monastery, one of the oldest and holiest Armenian sites in Karabakh, has reportedly fallen under Azerbaijani control.

 

Founded in the 4th century by St. Gregory the Illuminator, this monastery holds historical significance as the place where the Armenian alphabet was first taught. Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet, established the first Artsakh school at Amaras.

The civilian population of 6 communities of Artsakh’s Askeran and Martuni districts (Khramort, Khnabad, Sarnaghbyur, Nakhijevanik, Machkalashen and Chankatakh) was evacuated. Artsakh Ombudsman Gegham Stepanyan announced this on September 19 on his official page on X (formerly Twitter).

Blinken: US calls on Azerbaijan to cease hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh

US State Secretary Antony Blinken on 19 September made a statement calling on Baku to “immediately cease” military operation in Artsakh. Noting that the United States is “deeply concerned” over the hostilities the statement said as follows: “As we have previously made clear to Azerbaijan, the use of force to resolve disputes is unacceptable and runs counter to efforts to create conditions for a just and dignified peace in the region”.
