Armenia needs the ability to defend itself and protect its population, French Minister of the Armed Forces Sebastien Lecornu wrote in his account on the social network X on 24 October.
“Dear Suren\, I am glad that our relations are developing in three directions,” the minister wrote addressing to the Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan. Among the three areas of cooperation, he named the reformation of the Armenian army, cooperation in the field of military training, as well as strengthening air defense and ground forces.
Lecornu noted that in January 2023, a French defense mission was opened in Armenia, an adviser from France was appointed to the Armenian Ministry of Defense team, cooperation was established between military educational institutions, French operational training units conduct courses in mountain defense and precision shooting. The minister also recalled the agreement on the acquisition of three radars, discussions around the sale of Mistral missiles, and an audit of Armenia’s ground and air defense.
To note, on 23 October, Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan and French Armed Forces Minister Sebastian Lecornu signed an agreement on bilateral cooperation in Paris, in particular on the sale of three GM200 radar stations.
