Armenian delegation to attend Granada summit, despite Aliyev’s non-participation

The Armenian delegation led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will go to the European Political Community summit in Granada. He stated this on 4 October during a question-and-answer session in the National Assembly.

To note, a day earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev refused a visit the Granada summit, where a meeting with the Armenian prime minister was planned through the mediation of Germany, France and the EU. Aliyev explained  the non-attendance by the fact that there would not be no representative of Turkey at the meetings, and the President of France will attend it, while Paris, according to the Azerbaijani leader, takes an openly pro-Armenian position.

“Until recently and up to today, we have been confirming our visit to Granada. We have been very constructive and optimistic because we believed that there was an opportunity to sign a landmark document. Until this morning, I assessed this opportunity very highly,” Pashinyan said.

As part of the Armenian delegation, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Secretary of the Security Council Armen Grigoryan are traveling to Granada with the Prime Minister. According to the Prime Minister, the document was based on three most important principles - mutual recognition of the territorial integrity of the two countries, an agreement on demarcation and delimitation based on the Alma-Ata Declaration using maps of 1975. The third principle is unblocking transport communications.

The Prime Minister called it problematic that the highest officials of Azerbaijan did not confirm their commitment to these principles.

“This raises doubts that when they actually talk about peace, they mean some hypothetical claims to the territorial integrity of Armenia. As soon as Azerbaijan declares that it confirms its commitment to these three principles, on the same day we can consider that peace has practically been achieved,” Pashinyan emphasized.

“We hope that this conceptual document, which is on the table now, will be written down. I am ready to sign this document, and it is a pity that tomorrow I will not be able to announce this decision,” Pashinyan emphasized.
