Armenian, French defense ministers discuss border tensions with Azerbaijan

Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan during his visit in Paris on 27 September discussed the situation on the border with Azerbaijan with his French counterpart Sébastien Lecornu. According to a post on Lecornu’s official Twitter account, the interlocutors discussed the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. 


“We have exchanged opinions on the situation on the border with Azerbaijan where the hostilities should cease and the Azerbaijani forces have to withdraw to their initial positions,” the post says. 
The tweet also announces on a “speedy dispatch” of a French delegation to Armenia for the assessment of the situation on the ground.

 
It is worth mentioning that according to French official sources President Emmanuel Macron held a phone conversation following the meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on 26 September. The statement said that the French leader reiterated earlier French calls for to maintain the ceasefire, withdrawal of Azerbaijani forces to initial positions and respect for Armenia’s territorial integrity.
