Deputy Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Ruben Rubinyan in an interview to the Public Television aired on 4 September has dismissed several points expressed earlier in a publication by the Russian official TASS news agency.
Retorting against the agency’s unnamed “diplomatic source” warning Yerevan not to become a “tool in the hands of the West” against Russia, the Deputy Speaker said Armenia has never been so. “There is no proof to it, there can be no trustworthy analysis on it”, he said, adding that Armenia had always observed its alliance commitments.
Rubinyan also dismissed another statement by the same source, claiming that Armenia preferred EU observers to monitor the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border over the option of deploying CSTO peacekeepers on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. “The decision on the arrival of the observers was made in October 2022 in Prague. [...] By that time there was no discussion of any CSTO peacekeepers,” he said.
Ruben Rubinyan also mentioned that the short-term observers had visited Armenia following the Azerbaijani aggression in September 2022 and that was before the meeting in Prague. “We have never been faced with a choice between the EU and CSTO observers,” he said.
