Austrian Parliament condemns ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh

On 19 October the Austrian Parliament unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the ethnic cleansing of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh carried out by Azerbaijan, the Armenian Embassy in Austria reported.

Armenian Ambassador to Austria Armen Papikyan was invited to the meeting as an honorary guest.

As noted in the embassy's statement, all five parliamentary factions supported the resolution, which calls on the federal government to “condemn at all international platforms and in bilateral discussions the military actions of Azerbaijan, which led to a mass exodus of more than 100 thousand ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh.”

The resolution emphasizes the importance of protecting the rights of Armenians remaining in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as implementing the decisions of the International Court regarding free movement through the Lachin corridor.

Also in the document, deputies call on the Federal Government of Austria to take an active part in ensuring the free and long-term work of humanitarian organizations in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as in the protection of cultural monuments and churches of Nagorno-Karabakh. The resolution also calls for the provision of the necessary funds to Armenia, as a priority area of Austrian cooperation, to further stabilize the humanitarian situation.
