Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan said at a meeting of the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament in Dublin on September 29 that with its aggressive actions Baku is calling into question its suitability as a member of the Council of Europe.
“Despite the presence of Russian peacekeepers, Azerbaijan unleashed another large-scale military attack on the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh,” said the National Assembly speaker, adding that Baku’s aggressive intentions were recently voiced by Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev.
“Azerbaijan’s actions are not limited to Nagorno-Karabakh, they also extend to the sovereign territories of Armenia, part of which is occupied by Azerbaijan,” Simonyan said and added that Baku still refuses to return the confirmed 35 Armenian POWs and civilian detainees.
In his speech, the speaker also noted that he was not surprised by the common rhetoric of Turkey, Azerbaijan and Russia regarding Armenia and Artsakh, but called on the Council of Europe, an organization created to protect human rights, to refrain from it.
On the sidelines of the conference, Alen Simonyan held several meetings with colleagues from different countries. In particular, on September 29, he discussed interparliamentary relations with the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk. At the meeting, the interlocutors discussed the prospects for the development of inter-parliamentary relations and emphasized the broad opportunities of parliamentary diplomacy.
