EU appointed new Special Representative for the South Caucasus

Estonian diplomat Toivo Klaar became the new Special Representative of European Union External Action Service (EEAS) for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia.

Klaar will be responsible for supporting peaceful resolution of the conflicts in the region, particularly in Nagorno-Karabakh and Georgia. He will also work for developing regional cooperation.  

Toivo Klaar replaced German diplomat Herbert Salber, who had held the position since 2014. Klaar was head of EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia; he is currently the head of Central Asian Division.

Launched in 2011, EEAS has a broad network of diplomats all over the world who work with EU institution, such as foreign and defense ministries of the member states, to create better connections between EU and foreign countries.
