The European Union reiterates its call to ensure freedom and security of movement along the Lachin corridor. The statement was made by the Delegation of the European Union to the Council of Europe at the 1473rd meeting of the Committee of Ministers on 6 September 2023.
“The EU deplores that the activities of the International Committee of the Red Cross in the region have been heavily hampered and calls for their full and swift resumption, including transport of humanitarian supplies”, the statement said.
The statement also mentioned that the communication with Artsakh has been impaired for nine months while since 15 June the Lachin corridor is “almost completely blocked” resulting in a shortage of medical supplies and essential goods “with dire consequences for the local population”.
The statement also touched on the escalation along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. “The EU has been closely following the growing tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia along their international border over the past months, with shooting incidents reported almost on a daily basis. We call on all sides to avoid further incidents and recommit to dialogue,” the statement says.
The statement also urged for a “swift establishment of a of dialogue between Baku and representatives of Armenians living in the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast” calling it a crucial factor for resolving humanitarian issues as well as those concerning the rights and security of Karabakh Armenians.
Meanwhile on the same day Armenian Defense Ministry held a briefing on the border situation for the Foreign military attachés and representatives accredited in Armenia. Levon Ayvazyan, Director of the Defense Policy and International Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Defense said that the Armenian Armed Forces are taking necessary steps to prevent any possible escalation.
