European Parliament vows support to Armenian people in overcoming challenges - Metsola

The European Parliament welcomes the resumption of peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan through the mediation of the European Council, and is also ready to support the Armenian people in “difficult time for them.”

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, said this on 17 October, speaking in Strasbourg at a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

“It is no coincidence that our parliament has been actively speaking out all this time. Both resolutions and the report were approved by us with an overwhelming majority of votes. We welcome that President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan agreed to another meeting mediated by the head of the European Council Charles Michel in Brussels before the end of October, in particular because for us the negotiations also mean delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, discussion of communications and humanitarian issues,” - Metsola said.

On 5 October, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which, in particular, it called for targeted sanctions against the leadership of Azerbaijan. According to Metsola, after the resolution was approved, the next goal was to resume even and peaceful negotiations.

“I assure you, Armenia is an important partner for us, we express our full support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and inviolability of Armenia’s borders,” Metsola said.

She also called for respect for the rights and safety of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, for the active involvement of the international community, as well as for international guarantees that Armenians can continue to live in Nagorno-Karabakh.
