Foreign officials, diplomats decry Armenian POWs’ execution by Azeri forces

A number of representatives of International organizations, high-ranking diplomats and officials have reacted to the recently appeared video showing extrajudicial execution of Armenian POWs by Azerbaijani servicemen.

The EU Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Peter Stano at a news conference said that “the footage, which shows how Azerbaijani soldiers execute Armenian soldiers, should be investigated by the Azerbaijani authorities”.

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price wrote in his tweet: “The United States is deeply troubled by recent reports that Azerbaijani soldiers are executing unarmed Armenian prisoners. We call for a full and impartial investigation. Those responsible for each atrocity must be brought to justice."

When asked on Moscow’s reaction to the atrocity footage, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that “The video is replete with scenes of extreme cruelty”.

She also on to “thoroughly investigate all cases of violations of international humanitarian law”. Zakharova also added: “If the facts are confirmed, all those responsible must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

It is worth reminding that Armenia earlier filed a lawsuit at the European Court of Human Rights against Azerbaijan on the protection of POWs’ rights. The video footage of a group of Armenian POWs being apparently shot at by Azerbaijani servicemen which appeared on some telegram channels was submitted to the court as part of the lawsuit.
