French Minister of Culture Rima Abdul-Malak visited Armenia on 26 October, paid tribute to the victims of the Armenian Genocide and visited the Matenadaran - the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, where she held a joint press conference with the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports (ONKS) of Armenia Zhanna Andreasyan.
The ministers told reporters they discussed cooperation between Armenia and France in the field of culture, in particular in the field of music, ballet, and cinema.
One of the central topics of discussion was the protection of the Armenian cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh. As Rima Abdul-Malak reported, France submitted an official request to UNESCO to obtain permission to visit these territories and record all Armenian cultural and historical samples. The minister also said that the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Zones (ALIF) is participating in the work, which took satellite images of Artsakh’s cultural objects to monitor their further condition.
“The Armenian cultural heritage is under threat in Nagorno-Karabakh, and I, as minister, have taken upon myself, sparing no effort, to raise this issue on international platforms so that it constantly remains in the spotlight,” said the French Minister of Culture.
Zhanna Andreayan, in turn, emphasized that there are more than 5 thousand Armenian cultural monuments on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
