The presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan, Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev, met in Bishkek on October 12. As reported on the Kremlin website, the presidents are in Bishkek to participate in a meeting of the Council of CIS Heads of State on October 13.
As Vladimir Putin noted at the beginning of the meeting, the agenda of the bilateral meeting included an extensive list of issues that were discussed openly, and issue number one was the situation around Karabakh, which the parties were going to discuss behind closed doors.
“I propose to organize our work as follows: then, perhaps, we will start with the second part and give our colleagues the opportunity to speak out, talk, and then we will also stay and communicate face to face, talk about the entire complex, including the so-called sensitive questions,” Putin said at the meeting.
In turn, Aliyev called the results of the current year impressive in terms of trade turnover with Russia, industrial cooperation, and cooperation in the transport sector.
“As you noted, we recently talked with you, and it is very gratifying that you found time to meet within the framework of your state visit to Kyrgyzstan,” Aliyev said.
On the same day, the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Toivo Klaara, reports the press service of the Armenian government.
The meeting was also attended by the head of the EU delegation to the Republic of Armenia, Ambassador Vasilis Maragos.
During the meeting, issues related to the process of settling relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan were discussed, and the importance of continuing the process was emphasized.
The humanitarian situation that arose in connection with the forced resettlement of more than 100,000 of our compatriots as a result of Azerbaijan’s policy of ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh was touched upon.
