Lithuania is ready to support deepening of relations between Armenia and the EU, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte said on 19 October 19 at a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan.
She particularly noted that Lithuania is ready to provide expert support for the implementation of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, as well as for reforms in Armenia.
The heads of government reported that at the bilateral meeting they discussed issues of cooperation between Armenia and the EU, cooperation between Armenia and Lithuania, in particular in the fields of economics, renewable energy, transport, and the environment. Regional security issues were also discussed, in particular, the situation with forcibly evicted Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh and negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Ingrida Simonyte noted that Lithuania supports the mediation efforts of the European Union and the United States, in addition, the country has provided financial support to refugees from Artsakh.
“Today, more than ever, democracies must come together and stand shoulder to shoulder to defend their values and the rules-based world order. This is another reason why I am here,” Simonyte said.
In turn, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan thanked Lithuania for its support in making important decisions for Yerevan in the EU, in particular, on the deployment of a civilian observation mission along the state border of Armenia with Azerbaijan.
“I presented the project and proposal of Armenia “Crossroads of the World”, which I also spoke about in the European Parliament, the main goal of which is the opening and activation of regional communications north-south and east-west, including through the territory of Armenia, which will connect the Caspian Sea with the Mediterranean, Black Sea with the Persian Gulf. This can become not only a long-term guarantee of stability and development of our region, but also become an important link in global economic cooperation. This can also intensify economic ties between the EU and Armenia as well as Lithuania and Armenia,” the Prime Minister of Armenia noted.
