Mirzoyan addresses the UN Security Council: Baku continues pursuing a genocidal policy towards the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh

Baku continues pursuing a genocidal policy towards the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan announced at the UN Security Council on December 14.

As reported by the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry, Mirzoyan took part in the ministerial meeting of the Security Council at the invitation of his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

“As we speak, the people of Nagorno-Karabakh have been deprived of the right to free movement: mothers are separated from their children, terminally ill people can’t get medical supplies and help. Even worse, in freezing winter conditions, the gas supply to Nagorno-Karabakh has been severed by Azerbaijan,” — announced Mirzoyan.

He pointed to the threat of a humanitarian crisis, and if the Lachin corridor is not unblocked, it will lead to disaster in Artsakh. “In such conditions, the leadership of Azerbaijan claims that they are ready to provide rights and security guarantees for Armenians and that no international mechanism or presence is required. What we have at hand is illustrative of how they imagine these guarantees”, — the minister said.

Mirzoyan also recalled the 44-day war in 2020: “International community proved unable to prevent the unjustified use of force of Azerbaijan against the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, which resulted in thousands of dead, wounded and a new wave of displacement.”

The head of the Armenian Foreign Ministry also stressed the "inability" of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmanship to fulfill its duties, despite the mandate of the UN Security Council. “One of the parties [Azerbaijan] to the conflict essentially blocks the activities of this format, moreover, unilaterally declares that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has been resolved by use of force, thus hampering the potential solution of the conflict through international mediation”, — he noted.

Mirzoyan reminded that after the Azerbaijani aggression against Armenia on September 13-14, the UN Security Council was convened, but the security situation has not changed, and the territories of Armenia continue to remain under occupation.

On the same day, Ararat Mirzoyan briefed the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the situation in the Lachin corridor.

According to "Armenpress" with reference to the statement of the UN Secretary General, Guterres urged the sides to de-escalate tensions and to ensure freedom and security of movement along the Lachin corridor.

Mirzoyan, in a meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on December 14 in New York, emphasized the inadmissibility of Azerbaijan's continuous policy of subjecting the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh to ethnic cleansing.
