Parliament Speaker: Armenian independence not subject to bargain

Armenian National Assembly’s speaker Alen Simonyan at a news briefing in the Parliament on 4 October denied rumors on possible accession to the Russia-Belarus union or joining Russia. “Armenian independence, its sovereignty are not subjects of discussion,” he said.

Answering a question on the lack of efficient support to Armenia by either the CSTO or Russia against the Azerbaijani aggression, Simonyan opined that the organization is not “duly responding” however advised against “dramatic moves”. Touching on the Russian-Armenian treaty on mutual defense the speaker said: “Armenia has issued an appeal, and so far – as far as I know – we got no reply. Not even a rejection.”

Speaking on the possible peace treaty with Azerbaijan and issue of territorial integrity, Alen Simonyan said that Yerevan has no territorial claims from its neighbor and that Armenia and Azerbaijan had mutually recognized their territorial integrity in several documents signed since 1991. As to the Artsakh issue, according to the speaker, it is a matter of right to self-determination and therefore it can be omitted altogether in the text of the treaty. “It is my personal opinion,” Simonyan added.

It is worth to remind that an Armenian parliamentary delegation headed by the speaker of the National Assembly will visit Moscow on 9 October at the invitation of the Russian Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin.
