The Spanish Senate has adopted a declaration on the military aggression carried out by the Azerbaijani authorities against the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh, which led to the death of hundreds and a mass exodus of thousands of Armenians. This was reported on the Senate website on 17 October.
“The Senate expresses its strongest condemnation of the unjustified military operations carried out by the Republic of Azerbaijan, which threaten regional security and stability,” the declaration said.
The Senate calls Azerbaijan's disregard of its obligations under the ceasefire declaration of November 9, as well as the decisions of the International Court, unacceptable, and also reminds Baku of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide.
The Spanish Senate also called for the resumption of peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. While regretting the loss of life, the Senate expressed solidarity with the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh and support for the Armenian community in Spain.
The Senate also welcomed the humanitarian contribution carried out by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECID), as well as the assistance announced by the Spanish Government in response to the needs of internally displaced persons.
