Unblocking communications key to Yerevan-Baku normalization - Russian spokesperson

Unblocking transport routes in the South Caucasus is a key element of Armenian-Azerbaijani normalization. This opinion was expressed by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova in an interview with Trend agency, published on 18 October.

She noted that a “package of promising railway and road routes” is being considered by a tripartite working group co-chaired by the vice-premiers of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“A common understanding has been reached regarding the implementation of specific steps to restore and organize railway communication along the Yeraskh – Julfa – Meghri – Horadiz route. In our work, we proceed from the need to comply with the principles of reciprocity, respect for the sovereignty and jurisdiction of both countries,” Maria Zakharova added.

She also emphasized that success on the track of unblocking communications will give additional impetus to other areas of trilateral work. This also applies to the development of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and the launch of a dialogue between social activists and parliamentarians.

The article also notes that this route has great potential and could become one of the continuations of the “One Belt - One Road” project, as well as part of the North-South corridor.
