US, EU to provide humanitarian aid to forcibly displaced people from Artsakh

The US government will allocate 11,5 million dollars in humanitarian aid for the forcibly displaced population of Nagorno-Karabakh, USAID Administrator Samantha Power said on 26 September during a visit to the Armenian village of Kornidzor.

“It is very difficult to hear and see what these families are going through. Many left their towns and villages under shelling,” she said visiting the village which is the first settlement inside Armenia following the Lachin corridor.

Samantha Power said it is necessary for international monitors and humanitarian organizations to have access to Nagorno-Karabakh to provide assistance to those in need on the ground.

Meanwhile the EU announced boosting its humanitarian funding with 5 million euros in response to the increasing needs resulting from the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis, the European Commission’s press service said in a statement.

“The conflict escalation and subsequent ceasefire is expected to trigger a mass exodus of people from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, with approximately 13 500 refugees having crossed the border already. At the same time, there is a major food shortage and lack of access to electricity and water within the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave,” the European Commission said.

The €5 million humanitarian funding includes €500 000 of emergency support announced last week and €4.5 million new funding, which will be delivered by various EU humanitarian partners operating in Armenia and support vulnerable people inside Nagorno-Karabakh via the International Committee of Red Cross.

Swedish Ambassador to Armenia Patrik Svensson also said his country allocated 15 million kronor (1.3 million dollars) to the International Committee of the Red Cross “to meet urgent humanitarian needs of Nagorno-Karabakh people including for medical transports, food and cash contributions.
