US official: Washington not to put up with ethnic cleansing in Karabakh

The United States will not accept the current humanitarian situation in Artsakh, Acting Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Yuri Kim said at the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Nagorno-Karabakh on 14 September.

“the United States will not countenance any action or effort—short-term or long-term—to ethnically cleanse or commit other atrocities against the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh,” she said as quoted in the transcript of her testimony to the Senate committee.

Kim also underlined that any peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan must take into account the importance of protecting the rights and security of the Armenians in Artsakh. “This is an essential element of any durable and dignified peace agreement. Azerbaijan must provide internationally verifiable assurances of respect for their rights and their ability to remain in their homes and live without fear,” said the US official.

Meanwhile US. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller at a news briefing on the same day reiterated calls for reopening the Lachin corridor.

“We want the Lachin Corridor to be opened immediately. We have made that clear’, he said as quoted.
