US State Department urges to open Lachin corridor

The US State department on 31 August made public a statement on the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Artsakh.

“We reiterate our call to immediately re-open the Lachin corridor to humanitarian, commercial, and passenger traffic.  Further, officials from Baku and representatives from Stepanakert should convene without delay to agree on the means of transporting critical provisions to the men, women, and children of Nagorno-Karabakh – including additional supply routes – and resume discussions on all outstanding issues.  Basic humanitarian assistance should never be held hostage to political disagreements,” the statement says.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell also touched on the issue of the Lachin Corridor opening. Speaking on 31 August at a press conference following the EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Toledo, Spain Borrel said that the issue was discussed at the meeting. “We call on the Azerbaijani authorities to ensure safe and free movement along Lachin Corridor,” he said.
