Yerevan Leadership is making a huge mistake – Russian Foreign Ministry

On September 25 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation issued a statement reproaching the leadership of Armenia and personally Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan with unfriendly actions. In particular, the Russian Foreign Ministry denied Pashinyan’s accusations against Moscow, voiced in his last televised address.

“This is an attempt to relieve himself of responsibility for failures in domestic and foreign policy, shifting the blame to Moscow. Latest statements by N. Pashinyan confirms our earlier conclusions that processes inspired by the West and spurred on by official Yerevan, destructive for our own country and our allied relations, are not episodic, but systemic in nature,” the statement says.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also points to “similarity in interests in matters of security and development,” while noting that “the United States and other NATO countries have set as their goal not only to inflict strategic damage on Russia, but also to destabilize our common Eurasian space.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry in its statement calls the protest movement on the streets of Yerevan following the Azerbaijani aggression in Artsakh a consequence of “N. Pashinyan’s irresponsible approach” while at the same time refuting Yerevan’s accusations of “inspiring” the named protests. The Russian Foreign Ministry also accused the Armenian authorities of unleashing a “real anti-Russian campaign” in the Armenian media.

In the final part of its statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry notes in particular: “The Yerevan leadership is making a huge mistake, deliberately trying to destroy the multifaceted and centuries-old ties between Armenia and Russia and making the country a hostage to the geopolitical games of the West. We are confident that the overwhelming majority of the Armenian population is also aware of this.”
