Armenia Appointed Its First Woman Mayor

Diana Gasparyan was appointed Acting Mayor of Echmiadzin, Armenia’s 4th largest city. This is the first time a woman will be holding the office of mayor since the country declared its independence in 1991.

Diana Gasparyan was born in Echmiadzin. In 2011, she graduated from Yerevan State University, Faculty of Law. She worked in the Criminal Court in Yerevan in 2008-2009, and in the Criminal Court of Appeal in 2009-2012. From 2016 to 2018 Diana Gasparyan led the Department for Relations with the European Court of Human Rights at the Ministry of Justice of Armenia.

Former mayor of Echmiadzin Karen Grigoryan resigned earlier in June after his father, Member of Parliament Manvel Grigoryan, was accused of corruption and detained by the National Security Service.
