Armenian Prime Minister holds meetings on sidelines of Granada summit: summary

Armenian Prime Minister spent a fruitful day attending the European Political Community summit. In particular, on the sidelines of the summit on October 5, he held talks with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Following the meeting with Ursula von der Leyen, a joint statement was adopted, which was published on the website of the European Commission.

The statement notes that the EU condemns Azerbaijan's military operation against the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Armenia and the EU are bound by common political values and their commitment to a rules-based international order. In these difficult times, the EU and Armenia stand shoulder to shoulder. We are committed to further strengthening EU-Armenia relations,” the statement said.

The document indicates that the volume of humanitarian assistance from the EU will reach 10.45 million euros.

Von der Leyen also announced that the Commission will allocate 15 million euros from the annual program for Armenia, which will be used to support the republic's budget. This will allow the Government of Armenia to meet urgent socio-economic needs and support the purchase of food and fuel.

“The EU and Armenia are committed to strengthening their economic ties as they work to unlock the full potential of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. In particular, the EU Economic Investment Plan (EIP) for Armenia provides up to 2.6 billion euros, which will be used for investments in significant infrastructure and other projects,” the statement said.

It is also noted that the European Commission will strengthen technical assistance to Armenia, especially in the field of air safety and nuclear security.

Roberta Metsola shared the details of the meeting on X, writing that she invited Pashinyan to speak at the plenary session of the European Parliament.

“Armenia needs our support and assistance to deal with the current humanitarian crisis caused by thousands of people leaving Nagorno-Karabakh. I met Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Granada today and invited him to address the European Parliament Plenary Session,” Metsola wrote.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also wrote about the results of the meeting on X, noting that this was his first meeting with the Armenian leader: “The Prime Minister of Armenia and I discussed the security situation in the South Caucasus. Ukraine is interested in the stability of the region and friendly relations with regional countries. We also discussed bilateral cooperation and trans-regional economic projects.”

To note, the main purpose of Pashinyan’s visit to Granada was to hold negotiations with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev through the mediation of President of the European Council Charles Michel, French Presiden Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Aliyev announced the refusal to attend the meeting the day before, on October 4, so the meeting took place without his participation. As a result of the four-party meeting, a statement was adopted.
